Nkounkou, Ulrich Pace 'Cats to 3rd Place at New Englands

HANOVER, N.H. – Senior decathlete Joel Nkounkou (Dover, N.H.) and junior runner William Ulrich (Mineola, N.Y.) turned in runnerup finishes Saturday to help the University of New Hampshire men's track & field team to third place in the New England Championships held at Dartmouth College.
Nkounkou won the discus throw, shot put and 110 meter hurdle events in the decathlon to collect 6,779 points and finish second to John Braga of Merrimack College. Freshman Frederick Schaake (Hampton, N.H.) was seventh in the decathlon with 5,789 points.
Ulrich ran the 1500 meters in 3 minutes, 47.36 seconds for the runnerup slot behind Dartmouth's Patrick Gregg in 3:46.74.
Those efforts, along with that of senior Mike Shanahan (Dover, N.H.), who won a New England championship in the hammer throw Friday night, led UNH to its third-place finish.
UP NEXT
The NCAA East Preliminary meet will be held Thursday, May 24 to Saturday, May 26 in Tampa. The top 48 ranked athletes in the East will qualify for the East Preliminary meet. Shanahan in the hammer throw and senior Elinor Purrier (Montgomery, Vt.) in the 1500 meter run will be UNH's representatives at the Prelims. The top 12 finishers in Tampa, along with the top 12 finishers from the West Prelims in Sacramento will advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships from June 6 to June 9 in Eugene, Ore.

The Wildcats compiled 53 points for third place in the New Englands behind Southern Connecticut (113.50 points) and Massachusetts (71). UMass Dartmouth (48.50) was fourth, Dartmouth was fifth (47.50) and Northeastern was sixth (40).
Among UNH's top results Saturday:

- Sophomore Nicolas Ochoa-Sevilla (Chester, N.H.) finished third in the 3000 meter steeplechase.
- Sophomore Zachary Astle (Newbury, N.H.) was sixth in the shot put (50 feet, 6 inches) and seventh in the discus (154 feet, 2 inches).
- Senior Nicholas Ritzo (Rye, N.H.) was fifth in the discus with a throw of 159 feet, 2 inches.
- Senior Brandon Allen (East Elmhurst, N.Y.) finished seventh in the 400 meter dash in 48.88 seconds.
- Freshman Jordan Buckmire was eighth in the triple jump at 45 feet, 11.75 inches.
- Junior Jon Chapman (Newport, R.I.) and junior Eric Brogioli (Milford, Mass.) helped Shanahan make the hammer throw a big event for UNH.
- Chapman finished fifth with a throw of 182 feet, 6 inches and Brogioli was sixth at 182 feet, 1 inch.
- Shanahan's throw was 227 feet, 3 inches.
- Sophomore Kyle Faucher (Danville, N.H.) was eighth in the javelin with a throw of 172 feet, 1 inch.
