DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire women's lacrosse team transformed its April 7 game against the University of Vermont into a fundraiser for One Love Foundation.
"We started working with One Love during preseason in January by completing the foundation's Escalation Workshop as a team," senior Devan Miller said. "It was a powerful experience and we wanted to do more for the foundation and spread our awareness to others, so we decided to host a One Love game."
In advance of April 7, the UNH women's lacrosse team promoted that the game would be dedicated to One Love.
"We chose the UVM game because it was on a Saturday night, under the lights, and we thought we could get a good crowd," UNH assistant coach Erin Rigby explained. "It's also a great rivalry game. We asked UVM and coach Dalton if they wanted to be involved and they jumped right on board, which we are so grateful for."
The Wildcats established an online giving site and, at the game, also sold specialized long-sleeve t-shirts with the New Hampshire and Vermont state silhouettes on the front as well as the One Love Foundation logo on the back. Both teams wore them as pregame shooting shirts
"We were so excited about the turnout at the game and that we were able to double our fund raising goal," Miller added. "It was awesome to see so much support, especially for a cause that is so special to the lacrosse community."
The UNH women's lax team raised a total of $2,247, and that included $1,065 in t-shirt sales.
"Our team interest in One Love sparked from the bystander training program that all UNH student-athletes are required to attend," senior captain Lizzie Suschana said. "One Love is a great supplemental program that educates people on the signs of an unhealthy relationship. An important part of being an active bystander is knowing what to look for. The two programs go hand-in-hand. I hope that our team will be able to continue raising awareness about One Love and educate our community on unhealthy relationships."
