Leonard, Gurello Score Three Goals Each in 15-10 Loss to UMBC

DURHAM, N.H. – Marissa Gurello (Manorville, N.Y.) and Rylee Leonard (Coventry, R.I.) scored three goals apiece but the University of New Hampshire women's lacrosse team was defeated 15-10 by UMBC on Wednesday afternoon at Wildcat Stadium.
The three goals marked a personal best for Leonard and matched a career high for Gurello. Carly Wooters (White Plains, N.Y.; two goals), Teagan Northrup (Longmeadow, Mass.; one goal, one assist) and Devon Croke (Norwell, Mass.; two assists) also tallied multiple points.
Kate Clancy (Barrington, R.I.) finished with nine saves and two ground balls. UMBC counterpart Ashley Peacock was credited with 13 saves.
Sam Nolan (3g, 5a), Lauren McDonald (5g) and Sara Moeller (2g, 3a) led the Retrievers' attack.
UNH, which entered the game on a two-game win streak, is now 2-11 overall and 2-2 in America East. UMBC is 9-4, 2-1.
Both teams wore orange accessories, such as headbands and socks, to promote awareness for children's cancer. The UNH women's lax team has established a Go Fund Me website page to raise money for the Jimmy Fund in honor of two-year old Zachary Callahan, cousin of UNH senior Lexi Moirano, who was diagnosed with leukemia. GAME RECAP
- Northrup and Gurello scored goals 47 seconds apart – at 28:06 and 27:19 – of the second half to tie the score 8-8, but UMBC methodically pulled away with a 6-0 run spanning the next 23 minutes.
- The combination of Moeller to Nolan produced goals at 23:17 and 20:09 to put the Retrievers back in front, 10-8.
- Payton Van Kirk and Jamison scored 27 seconds apart – at 9:58 and 9:31 – to quickly extend the advantage to 12-8.
- McDonald and Moeller struck 75 seconds apart – at 5:53 and 4:38 – to build the largest lead of the game, six goals, at 14-8.
- Amy LeBel (Charlton, N.Y.) won the ensuing battle for the ground ball, found a seam down the middle of the field and bounced a shot into the upper-left corner. Her first career goal (and point) trimmed the deficit to 14-9 at 4:03.
- The Wildcats pulled within 14-10 on Leonard's third goal of the game at 3:18.
- UNH's Ashley Watson (Travers City, Mich.) won the ensuing draw control but the Wildcats lost possession and, at the other end of the field, Caitlin Miller scored into an empty net – Wildcat goalie Clancy had run off the field for an extra defender – at 1:31 to close the scoring.
- Back in the first half, UMBC took a 2-0 lead on goals by Jamison (at 28:01) and McDonald (24:52).
- New Hampshire responded with four consecutive goals to take a 4-2 lead. Leonard's goals at 22:41 and 19:02 sandwiched a strike by Gurello at 21:39. Wooters finished a feed from Croke to give the 'Cats a 4-2 advantage at 16:29.
- Jamison netted her second goal of the game at 13:55 to stop the run, but Michele Smith (Wantagh, N.Y.) set up Gurello to reestablish a two-goal margin of 5-3 at 11:39.
- McDonald and Moeller struck 13 seconds apart – at 11:08 and 10:55 – to knot the score at 5.
- UNH went back in front when Wooters finished Northrup's feed from behind the net at 3:55.
- The Retrievers once again displayed their quick-strike capability as McDonald scored consecutive goals at 1:46 and 1:08 to take a 7-6 lead into halftime.

- Wooters extended her point streak to eight games with her two-goal effort; she has 13-6-19 during the streak. Wooters has tallied a point in 12 of 13 games this season.
- Croke matched her career high of two assists that she established last Saturday at the University of Vermont.
- The three goals and three points are both personal bests for Leonard, who has recorded all five of her points (4-1-5) the past three games.
- Smith has tallied a point three consecutive games with two goals and an assist.
