WAKEFIELD, Mass. - University of New Hampshire women's hockey forward Meghara McManus (Milton, Mass.) has been named the Hockey East Player of the Week for her efforts against Vermont and Dartmouth this weekend. The Wildcats defeated Vermont 5-4 in overtime, and defeated Dartmouth on Sunday 6-1, with McManus tallying eight total points on three goals and five assists.
Of her three goals, one came on the power play, one came short-handed, and one tied the game with just seconds to spare.
Against Vermont on Friday, McManus opened the game with a power play goal less than two minutes into the game. In the third period the Wildcats found themselves down by two goals; McManus assisted on a goal 2:25 into the period to cut Vermont's lead to one, and then in the final minute, she tallied the game-tying goal with only 12 seconds left on the clock to send the game to overtime.
On Sunday against Dartmouth, McManus had a five-point game with one goal and four assists. Her goal in that game came on a penalty kill, where she intercepted a pass from the Dartmouth goaltender, skated behind the back of the net and beat the goaltender on the opposite side of the net for the teams' second short-handed goal of the season. Her four assists in that game came on the opening goal, the game-winning goal, UNH's fourth goal, and the final goal on the power play.
McManus and the Wildcats are 4-0-1 on the season, with three Hockey East matchups coming up on the week; they travel to #7 Northeastern on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. puck drop, before hosting Maine on Saturday, Oct. 28 for the annual Skating Strides game, which starts at 2 p.m. On the following Sunday, Oct. 29 they will host Boston Univeristy for a 2 p.m. puck drop.
