Wildcats Record Conference's Highest GPA The 2nd Straight Year
BOSTON – The University of New Hampshire won the America East Academic Cup for the second consecutive year and fourth time overall as UNH student-athletes compiled a conference-best 3.23 grade point average in the 2015-16 academic year. The announcement was made Thursday by America East.
The Wildcats also recorded a 3.23 GPA last year to earn a share of the Academic Cup. That mark, which was duplicated this year, is UNH's best in the 21-year history of the award.
New Hampshire was previously feted back-to-back in the 1998-99 and 1999-2000 academic years.
For the second consecutive year, the UNH men's indoor track & field team recorded the highest team GPA in that sport at 3.23. The Wildcats' women's soccer team was also best in the conference with a 3.51.
UNH had four student-athletes named as an America East Presidential Scholar-Athlete earlier this month for seniors who completed their undergraduate degree with a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or higher.
The 'Cats, who boasted two conference titlists in Fall 2015 – both women's cross country and volleyball won their third consecutive championship, placed the highest number of student-athletes on the America East Fall Honor roll for the seventh consecutive fall semester.
Also of note in the 2015-16 academic year, senior Laura Rose Donegan (Melbourne, Australia) was named the 2015 Women's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She was also honored with the women's cross country NCAA Elite 90 and America East Elite 18 awards. Elinor Purrier (Montgomery, Vt.) was the conference's Elite 18 recipient for women's outdoor track & field.
Every America East school and 75 percent of its teams compiled at least a 3.0 GPA and all the student-athletes combined for a 3.15 GPA – the highest ever.
UNH is followed in the America East Academic Cup standings by Binghamton University and University of Hartford in a tied for second at 3.21, University of Vermont (3.17), University of Maine (3.16), University at Albany (3.15), UMass Lowell (3.14), Stony Brook University (3.09) and UMBC (3.03).
The Academic Cup, established by the America East Board of Directors in 1995, is presented to the institution whose student-athletes record the highest grade-point-average during that academic year.
America East is proud to have one of most comprehensive academic awards programs in the country. In addition to the Academic Cup, the conference recognizes a Scholar-Athlete of the Year in every sport as well as both a Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Presidential Scholar-Athlete awards are bestowed to student-athletes who graduate with a 3.75 GPA. The Elite 18 program recognizes elite students while All-Academic teams comprised of student-athletes that excel both academically and athletically are chosen in each of the conference's 18 sports. The conference also recognizes all student-athletes who achieve at least a 3.0 GPA on its Academic Honor Roll, with those achieving a 3.50 average or better receiving Commissioner's Honor Roll status.
