DURHAM, N.H. – Head coach Bill Herrion of the University of New Hampshire men's basketball team has accepted an invitation to participate in the eighth annual CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT) on Friday.
The Wildcats will play in postseason play for the second consecutive season with a chance at a program-best 20 wins. New Hampshire currently holds a 19-12 overall record after finishing 11-5 in the America East. Herrion has put together the winningest two-season span in program history, accumulating 38 wins the past two seasons.
"We are very excited about being invited to the CollegeInsider.com Tournament for the second consecutive year," said Herrion. "It is a great honor for our basketball program to be considered for postseason play two years in a row for the first time in program history. We are looking forward to playing in the tournament next week with a chance at a single-season record 20 wins."
The Wildcats will play on the road next week to kick off the tournament. The opponent has yet to be determined. The Wildcats were also invited to the College Basketball Invitational.
UNH's America East championship run ended in the semifinal round, for the second straight season, against the University of Vermont in a 63-56 decision. The Wildcats hosted a quarterfinal round game in back-to-back years as the No. 4 seed. No. 5 Binghamton University traveled to Durham on March 2 and fell to UNH 56-51.
The CIT was created because of the greater number of programs that continued to receive no consideration for postseason play. The first six tournaments had major success rewarding deserving programs from 24 Division I conferences.
Sophomore Tanner Leissner (Converse, Texas) was named to the America East All-Conference First Team and junior Jaleen Smith (Freeport, Texas) was named to the All-Conference Second Team following the regular season. Leissner averages 16.0 points per game, third in the conference, and 7.1 rebounds per game, fourth in the league. Smith ranks second on the team in scoring (13.1 ppg) while grabbing 5.4 rebounds and dishing 5.3 assists per game. Smith also leads the league in free-throw shooting at 89.5 percent.
New Hampshire battled New Jersey Institute of Technology in last year's first round of the CIT, falling 84-77 in Newark, N.J.
