Women’s Soccer Opens 2015 With A 0-0 Tie to Rhode Island
8/21/2015 11:03:00 PM | Women's Soccer
DURHAM, N.H. – Sophomore Brooke Murphy (Monson, Mass.) recorded four shots as the University of New Hampshire women's soccer team opened the 2015 season at home with a 0-0 draw against the University of Rhode Island on Bremner Field.
Both team wrap up the season opener with a record of 0-0-1.
New Hampshire was led by senior Caroline Murray (New Canaan, Conn.) who chipped in four shots to lead the team with Murphy. The two connected on a few give-and-gos on the night but were unable to find the net. Sophomore tri-captain Mimi Borkan recorded three saves.
Rhode Island's forward Ari Stanton finished with two shots in 90 minutes of action. The team overall totaled nine attempts on goal. Goalkeeper Katie Nickles recorded eight saves for the Rams.
The game started 30 minutes late because of inclement weather but the Wildcats opened the first half with energy and control. The 'Cats had a 7-0 shot advantage over the Rams but Rhode Island held strong on the defensive end and kept the score tied at 0-0 to the end of the first half.
The second half had more even play. Rhode Island was able to rifle six shots and controlled possession for most of the half. New Hampshire had opportunities of their own with an additional five shots, but ultimately the score stood at zeroes at the end of regulation.
In both overtime periods, possession was split between the teams as each totaled three shots on goal. New Hampshire had a chance late on a free kick from about 35 yards with 40 seconds remaining but no Wildcat was able to get a touch on the ball and it bounced through the box and out the other side as time expired.
The Wildcats continue the three-game home stand on Sunday Aug. 23 (2 p.m.) when they play host to the University of Massachusetts Amherst on Bremner Field. For the most up-to-date information on the women's soccer program, visit the new UNHWildcats.com.
