Three-Time Ohio State All-American Joins Gail Goodspeed's Staff
DURHAM, N.H. – University of New Hampshire gymnastics head coach Gail Goodspeed announced Tuesday that former Ohio State University three-time All-American gymnast Sarah J. Miller has been hired as the team's new assistant coach, effective immediately.
"Sarah was an outstanding competitor during her career at Ohio State, and we are excited to bring such an accomplished gymnast into the Wildcat family," Goodspeed said. "She started her own choreography business last year, and we are looking forward to tapping into this skill set. Sarah can relate to our student-athletes as someone who has been in their position at the highest level of competition, and her energy and personality make her a great fit for our program."
During her illustrious career with the Buckeyes, Miller set the program record for most 9.9-plus scores to become the most decorated gymnast in school history. She was named an NACGC/W Regular Season All-American on balance beam during her junior season in 2013 when she won the NCAA Columbus Regional balance beam championship and competed at the NCAA Championships in Los Angeles. That same year, Miller was named Big Ten Balance Beam Champion. Miller was a four-time All-Big Ten First Team selection and a four-time member of the Academic All-Big Ten Team. In 2012, she was tabbed Second-Team All-American on both balance beam and floor exercise. The Collegeville, Pa., native won Big Ten Freshman or Gymnast of the Week awards 12 times en route to earning the conference's Freshman of the Year award in 2011.
Miller, who graduated from Ohio State last spring with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education, served as a coaching intern with the Buckeyes program during the 2014 preseason. Her duties included managing the recruiting and student-athlete database and reviewing inventory for all necessary equipment.
In 2014 Miller opened her own personal gymnastics choreography business, SJMChoreography, where she created, instructed and critiqued floor exercise and balance beam routines for optional level gymnasts.
For nearly a decade Miller coached at Berks East Gymnastics, assisting in their Special Olympics, camp, and artistic team programs in Parker Ford, Pa. There, she assisted with athletes with varying disabilities in learning balance beam routines and skills, developed and instructed lesson plans for athletes that are attainable for their disabilities and instructed athletes without disabilities in learning new skills and techniques.
Miller replaces Ali Carr, who departed in July to pursue other educational opportunities.
The 2014-15 Wildcats reached the NCAA Regional Championships for the 32nd time in 34 years and successfully reached postseason competition for the 34th time in Goodspeed's 36 years as head coach. Goodspeed was named the NACGC/W Northeast Region Coach of the Year for the sixth time in her career. UNH notched a 195.860 Regional Qualifying Score and an 18-8 overall record, which included a perfect 7-0 at Lundholm Gym. New Hampshire's 195.700 at the EAGL Championship was good for a runner-up finish and just 0.150 points shy from giving the 'Cats a second straight league championship.
