Drilling, Blasting Under Way In Preparation For Foundation Work
They were having a, well, blast on a sunny and hot Thursday afternoon at the UNH Stadium construction site.
One of the projects over the next week or so in the stadium will be to blast and remove ledge that sits at the scoreboard end of the field where drainage trenches and other elements of the stadium will be.
The first of the blasts came on Thursday afternoon. A crew drilled and placed its explosives and the area was covered with old tires to absorb the energy of the blast.
"They'll continue for about a week," said Eric Sage, a construction coordinator with PC Construction, the stadium contractor. "There will be one or two blasts a day depending on how drilling goes."
Workers were also digging trenches at the opposite end of the football field on Thursday to bring utilities from the Field House side of the stadium across to what will be the new home stands.
Foundation work will likely begin early next week with piles being driven first and concrete being poured after that.
Stadium work will continue through the 2015 football season and the project is due to be finished in time for the 2016 campaign.
The Wildcats will play five home games in 2015, the first on Sept. 26 against Central Connecticut. They also play at home against Elon on Oct. 3, against Rhode Island on Oct. 31, against Richmond on Nov. 7 and against Maine on Nov. 21.

UNH opens the season with three road games: at San Jose State on Sept. 3, at Colgate on Sept. 12 and at Stony Brook on Sept. 19. The other away games are at William & Mary on Oct. 17, at Delaware on Oct. 24 and at Albany on Nov. 14.
The Wildcats will look to keep their best-in-the-nation streak of 11 straight appearances in the FCS tournament alive in 2015. UNH went 12-2 last season and advanced to the tournament semifinals for the second straight season.
After dropping their opener at Toledo, the Wildcats won 12 straight games and went a perfect 8-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association to win the league title. They then fell to Illinois State, 21-18, in a semifinal game in Cowell Stadium.
