Women’s Soccer Improves to 4-0-0 in Conference Play, Defeating UMass Lowell, 4-2

DURHAM, N.H. – Sophomore Brooke Murphy (Monson, Mass.) and junior Kelsey Pratt (Milford, Mass.) each scored two goals as the University of New Hampshire women's soccer team defeated the University of Massachusetts Lowell, 4-2, Thursday night at Cowell Stadium.
The Wildcats tie last year's conference win total with four this season. Overall, the 'Cats have a record of 6-5-3 and 4-0-0 in conference. The River Hawks fell to 3-10-0 and 0-3-0 in conference.
Murphy increased her season total to nine goals with two tonight. Pratt scored her second and third goals of the season. Senior Caroline Murray (New Canaan, Conn.) and sophomores Jackie Feraco (Holden, Mass.) and Veronica Hardy (North Smithfield, R.I.) each tallied assists. Junior Mimi Borkan (Medfield, Mass.) recorded two saves, improving her record to 6-5-3 overall.
New Hampshire recorded an 18-8 shot advantage throughout the contest.
Following a 2-2 first-half tie, the 'Cats opened the second half with a Murphy goal in the 64th minute on a through ball from Feraco that split the defenders. Murphy controlled the pass and took a touch around the keeper to go up 3-2.
In the 82nd minute, Pratt scored her second on the night on a cross from Murray. Pratt received the pass inside the box and finished right in the middle for the dagger.
Murphy got the Wildcats on the board in the first half with a penalty kick goal created by Murray who was fouled inside the box. Murphy stepped up and finished bottom left to take a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute.
The River Hawks' Groffie scored the equalizer in the 18th minute off a corner kick from Katelyn Vieira. Viera's cross bounced inside the box off a few players and Groffie found the loose ball and finished it to even the score at 1-1.
Pratt scored her first on the night shortly after (19:24), as she buried a cross from Hardy inside the six-yard line to take a 2-1 advantage.
Just before halftime, UMass Lowell scored the tying goal (2-2) when Vieira scooped up a loose ball and finished bottom left on a breakaway attempt past Borkan's outstretched hands.
UMass Lowell was led by Vieira who recorded a goal and an assist. Groffie scored the team's first goal in the opening half. Goalkeeper Julia Schneider made four saves, dropping her record to 3-10-0.
New Hampshire continues conference play at Stony Brook University on Oct. 11 (2 p.m.) before returning to Bremner Field for its final home regular season contest against the University of Maine on Oct. 15 (7 p.m.).
