Brendan Copes joined the University of New Hampshire women’s basketball staff as an assistant coach in June 2012. He plays an integral role in recruiting, practice planning/supervision, game preparation, scouting and budgeting with a specialized focus on the development of post players. Under his tutelage, Carlie Pogue won the America East Player of the Year award in 2016-17, becoming only the second Wildcat (Kris Kinney, 1989) to ever earn that honor.
Before UNH, Copes spent over four years as the head women’s basketball coach at the United States Military Academy Preparatory School. As the supervisor of the program, Copes was responsible for all coaching and training duties and also assisted with the recruitment and assessment of prospective student-athletes. Copes was also the Director of Physical Testing at USMAPS, where he coordinated and monitored physical performance programs for over 250 West Point-bound cadets.
Prior to arriving at USMAPS, Copes was an administrative assistant coach for the men’s basketball staff at Marist College, where he was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the program including film breakdown, community outreach, player development and potential recruiting strategies.
Copes earned a B.A. in Communication Arts from Marist in 2003 and was a member of the basketball team. As a player, he helped the Red Foxes win the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship in 2002 and served as a team captain in his senior season. Additionally, he earned an M.P.A in Public Administration from Marist in 2007.
Copes and his wife, head coach Maureen Magarity, live in Nottingham, N.H., with their daughters Charlotte and Caroline.
