Stern Leads Track & Field Throwers at Husky Open


DEDHAM, Mass. – Senior Laura Stern (Shirley, Mass.) posted a first-place finish in the javelin as the University of New Hampshire outdoor track & field team sent a select group of throwers to the non-scoring Northeastern University Husky Open on Saturday at the Solomon Outdoor Track.

Stern, who competed for the first time in three years due to multiple injuries, topped the 29-thrower field with an ECAC-qualifying toss of 147-07, marking the 29th-best throw in the nation this season.

Sophomore Michelle Gearin (York, Maine), who also made the finals in the javelin, finished seventh with a toss of 112-08. Freshman Keila Grigware (Biddeford, Maine) and sophomore Grace Ouellette (Bedford, N.H.) placed 12th and 24th, respectively, with throws of 106-00 and 83-06.   

Junior Rosemary Read (West Greenwich, R.I.) recorded a runner-up performance in the hammer throw with a personal-best and ECAC-qualifying toss of 172-09. Sophomore Bacall Liset (Dover, N.H.) placed 15th overall in the event with a throw of 117-09.

Sophomore Jesse Swink (Groton, Conn.), the lone competitor on the men's side, finished ninth overall in the javelin with a toss of 166-00.

The Wildcats open the 2012 campaign on Saturday, March 31st when they take on the University of Maine at the Beckett Track & Field Complex in Orono, Maine.
