BURLINGTON, Vt. – Freshman Christopher Wingate (Hovik, Norway) of the University of New Hampshire men's soccer team in the 19th minute to lift UNH over Massachusetts, 1-0, Friday afternoon. The win improves the Wildcats to 2-1-0 on the season while the Minutemen fall to 0-2-1.
Wingate broke the 0-0 stalemate 18:45 into the game as he knocked a header in over UMass goalie Nick Ruiz from six yards out. Aaron Smith (Loudon, N.H.) played the ball to Wingate in the air to connect with the freshman in stride.
The Massachusetts offense tested freshman goalie Giovani Riello (Sao Paulo, Brazil), however the rookie denied each opportunity to preserve the 1-0 lead.
The Wildcats held offensive edge through the second half, pummeling Ruiz with six shots through the next 45 minutes of play. Riello turned away the only shot he faced in the second half, helping the Wildcats ultimately win by a score of 1-0.
It was the first game for Riello, who starts his collegiate career with a record of 1-0-0. Ruiz falls to 0-2-1 on the season. The 'Cats outshot the Minutemen by a total of 15-6.
The Wildcats will conclude the two-game tournament at the University of Vermont with a game Sunday against Colgate. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m.
