Men's Soccer Ousted by Albany, 3-1

DURHAM, N.H. -- The University of New Hampshire men's soccer team fell by a score of 3-1 to the University at Albany Sunday afternoon at Cowell Stadium. The loss puts the Wildcats at 5-4-3 on the year and 1-2-1 in America East play while the Great Danes improve to 4-9-0 overall and 2-2-0 in conference action. Ugo Uche (Ann Arbor, Mich.) tallied the goal for the 'Cats in the match.

The Great Danes struck first in the 43rd minute of play when Philip Persson received a pass from Phil Denara. Persson then carried the ball into the box and beat UNH keeper Travis Worra (Lancaster, Pa.) to the right side for a 1-0 lead. David Schlatter (Marlton, N.J.) nearly notched a goal for the Wildcats moments earlier when he connected with a corner kick from by Clint Caso (Kinnelon, N.J.) however the header went just wide of the net. At the end of the first half, Albany held a 1-0 lead over New Hampshire. 

The Wildcats stepped up the pressure on the Albany keeper in the second half with an offensive surge of shots, including a blast from Aaron Smith (Loudon, N.H.) that was stopped by Great Dane keeper Tim Allen. Albany increased its lead to 2-0 in the 72nd minute of play when Kit Alexieff received a pass from Anthony Rozzano and put it away. Uche was quick to respond for New Hampshire in the 73rd minute of the match when he rifled a shot from the top of the box that ricocheted off the crossbar and into the net. Robert Palumbo (Kingston, N.H.) assisted Uche on the play. Pomare Te Anau regained the two goal lead for Albany when he blasted a shot to the high right side of the net, making the score 3-1. Philip Persson tallied the assist on the play. The Wildcats kept pushing the attack, however at the end of the game Albany finished with a 3-1 win. 

Worra made two saves on the five shots that he faced in net for UNH in the match while Allen stopped eight of the nine shots he faced, all of which were in the second half. New Hampshire led the Great Danes in shots by a total of 18-9. Smith and Schlatter each tallied four shots in the game while Palumbo and Uche each notched a pair.

The Wildcats are back in action Tuesday, Oct. 16 when they travel to Holy Cross for a quick break from conference play. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
