New Hampshire men's hockey ties Northeastern, 2-2

DURHAM, N.H. -- Freshman Sean Collins (Reading, Mass) scored with 2:13 remaining in regulation to lead the University of New Hampshire men's hockey team to a 2-2 tie of Northeastern University in Hockey East action at the Whittemore Center on Friday.

Collins equalizer at 17:47 of the third vindicated the Wildcat freshman who had missed on a clear breakaway just four minutes earlier. Senior David Busch (Toronto, Ontario), sophomore Patrick Foley (Milton, Mass.) and freshman Ed Caron (Hudson, N.H.) had all been denied on similiar attempts in the third as well.

Northeastern netminder Jason Braun attempted to cut off a loose puck in the Northeastern zone before a streaking Collins could reach it. But Collins was able to poke the puck away and then hit the back of the net with a wrister to knot the game at two apiece.

Braun finished the game with 35 saves, while senior Matt Carney (Bridgewater, Mass.) turned aside 26 for UNH (2-1-1, 1-0-1 HE). Jim Fahey was the lone goal-scorer for the Huskies (2-2-0, 1-0-1 HE) with two goals in the first.

The Wildcats pulled to within 2-1 at 9:23 of the second on a powerplay goal by Sophomore Colin Hemingway (Surrey, B.C.). From the point, freshman Tyler Teplitsky (Saskatoon, Sask.) took the shot, setting up Hemingway for the tip-in past Braun.

A pair of goals by Fahey gave the Huskies an early 2-0 lead in the first. Fahey's first at 3:49 came as he followed up his own shot, poking the puck behind Carney, who lost sight of the puck after the intial save, and into the net open net. Fahey's second tally, a screened shot past Carney, occured at 17:45 on the power play.

The Wildcats return to action Nov. 2 at Merrimack College. Game time is 7 p.m.
