Wildcats claim third in America East standings
DURHAM, N.H. -Jermaine Anderson (Beverly, Mass.) converted two free throws with 12 seconds remaining to help push the University of New Hampshire men's basketball team past the University of Maryland-Baltimore County, 68-65.
Blagoj Janev (Sydney, Australia) led the Wildcats offensively, scoring all of his 16 points in the first half, shooting 4-of-11 in field goals and 6-of-6 at the free throw line.
Jay Greene opened the game with a 3-pointer at 18:30 to give the Retrievers a 3-0 start. Mike Christensen (Reston, Va.) countered with a trey at 18:11. Tyrece Gibbs (Brockton, Va.) banked a jumper at 17:49 and New Hampshire led 5-3.
Greene converted another basket behind the perimeter to spark a 9-2 UMBC at 16:50. Janev drained a triple at 12:46 that began a 17-2 run for the Wildcats. New Hampshire held a 42-30 advantage going into the half. New Hampshire was 12-of-24 (.500) from the field and 11-of-13 at the line in the first half. UMBC was 12-of-28 from the field (.429) in the half.
UMBC improved in the second half and began to chip away at New Hampshire's lead. Brian Hodges banked a jumper at 14:28 to cut the Wildcat advantage down to single digits (50-42). Gibbs converted a 3-pointer at 12:06, giving New Hampshire a 55-43 lead.
The Retrievers kept the Wildcats close in the closing minutes. Chris Pugh converted a basket behind the arc at 3:41, cutting the Wildcat lead to 62-61. Christensen added two from the line at 3:18 to boost the New Hampshire lead to 64-61. UMBC countered with a jumper from John Zito at 2:22. Zito was called for a foul at 2:06 and Jamaal Caterina sank both free throws, pushing the score to 66-63.
At 1:53, Christensen was called for a foul, allowing UMBC's Jerrell Dinkins to convert two more free throws, cutting the lead to 66-65 in favor of the Wildcats. A foul was called on Chris Pugh at the 12-second mark, and Anderson made both free throws to close out the game.
New Hampshire boasted four players with double figures in scoring. Christensen registered 11 points, Tyrece Gibbs scored 13 points and Anderson finished with 14. Janev led the Wildcats in rebounding with nine boards. Zito registered a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds for UMBC.
