DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire men's and women's cross country teams are set to host the America East Championships on Saturday, Oct. 27 at the College Woods course, located behind the UNH Field House. The men's 8K race is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. while the women's 5K race kicks off at 11 a.m.
The women's squad has finished runner-up at the last two conference championship meets and will turn to fifth-year senior Keely Maguire (Georgetown, Mass.) to lead a deep Wildcat field this time around. Maguire placed fourth overall at the 2011 championships as she crossed the finish line in a time of 17:03 and earned a spot on the all-conference team. Maguire has come on strong in recent weeks leading up to Saturday's championship, including a 58th-place finish at the NCAA Pre-National meet two weeks ago as she faced off against some of the top competition on the nation.
UNH will also draw strength from the veteran duo of junior Elise Beattie (Woodstock, Ill.) and senior Darcy James (Exeter, N.H.), who placed 10th and 11th, respectively, at last year's championship in times at 17:28 and 17:29. Beattie, who was also named to the 2011 all-conference team, placed 18th at the pre-conference meet earlier this season, while James placed 14th at that same meet.
The Wildcats will also look to freshman Laura Rose Donegan (Melbourne, Australia), who has made an immediate impact in her rookie campaign. The former America East Rookie of the Week placed second at the pre-conference meet, finishing in a time of 17:05.95.
The men's side has all the makings of a championship-caliber squad as the Wildcats look to capture the program's ninth America East title in the last 16 years after a seventh-place finish at the 2011 championships.
The senior tandem of Daniel DeCrescenzo (New Milford, Conn.) and Cory Sinotte (Manchester, N.H.) lead the Wildcats as both placed inside the top-five at the pre-conference meet earlier this season. DeCrescenzo, who finished 12th overall at last year's conference championships, took second at the pre-conference meet in a time of 26:11.37. Sinotte, who was the top Wildcat finisher in three meets this season, took third at the pre-conference meet and also placed 27th overall at the competitive NCAA Pre-National meet with a time of 24:52.2.
