DURHAM, N.H. – University of New Hampshire women’s cross country head coach Robert Hoppler announces senior Becky Haley (Dover, N.H.) and junior Kim Povec (Holland-Patent, N.Y.) as co-captains for the upcoming 2007 season. It was announced on Friday.

Haley, a Dover, New Hampshire native, enjoyed a dominant junior season on the cross country course and track last season. Haley placed fourth in a duel meet against rival Maine before placing 47th overall at the Murray Keating Invitational. Haley was also a force on the track as she placed first overall in the 1000-meters at the 2006-07 Indoor New England championships. She was second in the 1000-meters at the 2006-07 Indoor America East championships. Haley continued her success into the spring track season with an impressive fifth place showing in the 800-meters during the America East Championships.

Povec enters the 2007 season as a proven leader and runner and returns as one of UNH’s top runners from last season’s America East runner-up team. Povec placed 23rd overall at the 2006 America East Cross Country championships. She recorded a 25th place finish at the Albany Invitational before rounding out the top 20 at the Murray Keatinge Invitational. Povec also carried her success throughout the indoor and outdoor track seasons. She registered a fifth place in the 10000-meters, while placing seventh in the 5000-meters to help contribute to another second place finish at the America East championships.

“Both Kim and Becky represent everything that is positive about UNH cross country,” said coach Hoppler. “Their achievements in the classroom and cross country course will serve as exceptional role models for the young Wildcat team,” he added.

The Wildcats open the 2007 campaign by hosting Providence College and Boston College on Saturday (Sept. 1) at 11:00 am.
