UNH LAST TIME OUT: New Hampshire kicked off the 2012 campaign with a 1-2 showing at the Villanova Classic over the weekend. UNH opened the season with a 3-0 victory over Robert Morris, led Morgan Thatcher who posted 13 kills with a .542 hitting percentage. Rookie Tori Forrest added 11 kills and hit at a .526 clip. Destiny Tolliver posted a .292 hitting percentage and was named to the Villanova Classic All-Tournament Team. Her best match came against host Villanova as she racked up a career-high 21 kills for a .405 hitting percentage.
SCOUTING THE HUSKIES: The Northeastern University volleyball team captured its second-straight Beanpot Classic Tournament in the opening weekend. The Huskies downed Alabama in five sets, swept Holy Cross and defeated reigning Northeast Conference champion Sacred Heart, 3-1. Nicole Kurz led the Huskies with 2.78 kills per set and a .426 hitting percentage, highlighted by an 11-kill, 11-block effort against Alabama. Northeastern was predicted to finish first in the 2012 CAA Preseason Poll. The Huskies finished 21-6 overall last season and earned the second seed in the CAA tournament but fell to No. 6 VCU in the semifinals.
DUNKLAU NAMED AE SETTER OF THE WEEK: Sophomore Taylor Dunklau averaged a conference-best 10.08 assists per set at the Villanova Classic over the weekend. Her assist total increased in each match as she set up 36 kills on 90 attempts (.400 team hitting percentage) in a 3-0 win over Robert Morris on Friday. She then had 43 assists and nine digs in a 3-2 loss to Maryland and 52 assists and 11 digs in a 3-2 loss to Villanova.
ALL-TIME SERIES: UNH is 23-17 all-time against Northeastern.
UNH PICKED FOURTH IN PRESEASON POLL: New Hampshire was predicted to finish fourth in the America East Conference this season in the 2012 America East Volleyball Coaches' Preseason Poll that was released last week. Two-time defending champion Albany topped the poll with 35 total points, including five first-place votes. Stony Brook secured the second spot with 29 points and one first-place tally, while UMBC earned the final first-place vote to finish third with 24 points. After UNH (23), Binghamton and Hartford tied for fifth with 15 points apiece, while Providence rounded out the field with six points.
