Durham, N.H. - As the University of New Hampshire volleyball team prepares for the America East championship in Towson, Maryland, sophomore Alyson Coler (Monte Sereno, Calif.) and freshman Bonnie Wilson (Moraga, Calif.) were named to the all-conference team, the conference announced today.
Coler, the 2000 America East Rookie of the Year last season, has followed up her strong freshman campaign with an MVP like performance this season, leading the Wildcats in kills so far with 4.37 per game. Wilson, who took Rookie of the Week honors just once this season, has been one of UNH's most consistent players, leading the team in digs with 2.89 per game.
Wilson, in addition to being named to the all-conference team, was an obvious choice for the all-rookie team. Also, junior co-captain Lauren Knight (Centerville, Mass.), who is third in kills for the 'Cats with 3.06 per game, was an all-conference honorable mention for 2001. Last season, Coler was an honorable mention all-conference and all-rookie selection.
University of Maine senior Leah Voss was voted America East Player of the Year. University of Hartford's Stephanie Volckers was named Rookie of the Year. Second-year Towson University head coach Chris Riley was named Coach of the Year for the No. 1 Seed Tigers. Setter of the Year went to Northeastern's Kristin Ursillo and Lisa Weir of Towson won Defensive Specialist of the Year.
The third-seeded Wildcats begin their quest for a second America East title when they take on second-seeded Northeastern on Saturday at the Towson Center (4:30 p.m.). The finals are Sunday at 1 p.m.
