New Hampshire Volleyball defeats Maine, 3-1

DURHAM, N.H. - Behind 20 kills from junior Lauren Knight (Centerville, Mass.), the University of New Hampshire volleyball team took its America East opener over the University of Maine at Lundholm Gymnasium on Wednesday.

The Wildcats and Black Bears split the first two games, 30-19, 27-30. New Hampshire took over the match late in the third game, however, with the teams tied at 22 apiece. Knight's kill on an assist from sophomore Erin Ludwig (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) sparked a 5-0 Wildcat run, as the Wildcats finished off Maine, 30-27, 30-19.

New Hampshire is now 5-0 in America East openers.

Also having a big night for the Wildcats (7-5, 1-0 America East) were sophomore Alyson Coler (Monte Sereno, Calif.) and freshman Bonnie Wilson (Moraga, Calif.). Coler picked up 15 kills, 12 digs and four service aces, while Wilson finished with 13 kills, nine digs and four blocks.

Leah Voss had a team-high 17 kills for the Black Bears (5-7, 0-1 America East). Randi Olin put down 12 kills and Cheryl Elliot picked up 48 assists.

Ludwig, from the setter position, had a fine night for the 'Cats with 52 assists, four kills, four digs and four blocks. The Wildcats outblocked the Black Bears overall 11-6.

UNH returns to action on the road this weekend as they travel to Northeastern University on Oct. 6 (1 p.m.) and Albany Oct. 7 (1 p.m.). The Wildcats next home game is against Towson University on Oct. 13 (1 p.m.).
