AMHERST, MASS – Senior thrower Erin Moore (Nashua, N.H.) of the University of New Hampshire women’s outdoor track and field team tallied a first place victory in the hammer and set a new facility record to go along with two second place finishes in the shot put and discus to lead the Wildcats to a third place showing at the University of Massachusetts Invitational on Saturday.
The Boston College Eagles captured the victory with 192 points, while University of Maine (130) squeaked by UNH (128). UMass followed with a fourth place finish (48) as seven teams competed.
After a week off due to last week’s inclement weather, the Wildcats responded by posting a number of breakthrough performances, which were highlighted by Moore’s win in the hammer (160-11) and second place finish in the shot put (43-3) and discus (128-6).
Junior Kiah Quarles (Derry, N.H.) captured second place in the 100-meter hurdles (15.7) and leaped 16-10.75 to take home fourth in the long jump. The Wildcats posted a number of second place efforts throughout the day as junior Cathy Parker (Westford, Mass.) raced to a second in the 3000m steeplechase (10:26.36), Kelly Thomas (Chichester, N.H.) was runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles (1:06.67), freshman Rita Ciambra (Hanover, N.H.) scored second place points in the pole vault (10-0) and sophomore speedster Sarah Hall (Nottingham, N.H.) sprinted to second in the 100-meters (12.76).
Also competing strong for the Wildcats was graduate student Johanna Fickenscher, who placed fourth in the 3000m steeplechase (11:16.08) and Kim Usseglio (Watertown, Mass.) posted a third in 400-meters (1:00.84). Freshman Ashlee Lathrop (Sherburne, N.Y.) was fourth in the hammer (140-6) and both the 4x400 and 4x100 meter relays notched second place finishes on the afternoon.
UNH is back in action next Saturday (April 21) with a visit to the Dartmouth College. The meet is set to start at 12 noon.
