PARKER BREAKS AMERICA EAST CHAMPIONSHIP RECORD TO PUSH WILDCATS IN SUCCESSFUL FIRST DAY

DURHAM - The University of New Hampshire women's track and field team set the pace on the first day of the America East Outdoor Championship at Reggie F. Atkins Track and Field Facility on Saturday, May 6.

Sophomore Cathy Parker (Westfield, Mass.) was the 3000 meter steeplechase champion with a winning time of 10:32.76 seconds. Parker's time was a NCAA qualifying time, and also shattered the America East Championship Meet record held by Lesley Read, UNH class of 2004, by eight seconds. Heather Carmichael (Windsor, VT) and Hillary Greene (Old Towne, M.E.)also finished seventh and eighth in the event, respectively.

Senior Amanda Cmielewski (Englishtown, N.J.) earned a second place finish in the javelin throw with a top distance 37.30. In the hammer throw, the Wildcats grabbed third, fourth and fifth place. Erin Moore (Nashua, N.H.) had the best throw for the Cats' at 47.2m taking third, while Shelly Wu (Merrimack, N.H.) and Amanda Cmielewski followed behind with throws at 46.34m and 43.23m, respectively. Chloe Harry finished sixth in the long jump with a mark of 5.46m.

The women's team qualified several runners for Sunday's finals. Kiah Quarles (Derry, N.H.) finished second in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.66 seconds, while Alex Norden (Eaton, N.H.), Lauren Barbour(Tewksbury, Mass.), and Chloe Harry (Tyler, Texas) all qualified for the 400 m hurdles finals. In the 400 m dash, Kim Usseglio (Watertown, Mass.) qualified in 59.61 along with Jamie Bemis (Bow, N.H.) in 59.99. Freshman Sarah Hall (Nottingham, N.H.) qualified for the 200 m dash finals with at time of 25.73.

Hoppe (Hopkinton, Mass.) finished her first day of the women's Heptathlon in 7th place with a total of 2298 points, while teammate Kari Arnet (St. Charles, Il.) ended the day in 9th with 2013 points. Heptathlon events will begin on Sunday at 9am with the long jump.

The women's team is in second place overall with 48.5 points, 0.5 points behind Boston University. The meet will resume Sunday, May 7 at 11am. at the Reggie F. Atkins Track and Field Facilty. Results are posted at lancertiming.com.
