HANOVER, N.H. - Chia-Ling Wu (Merrimack, N.H.) broke the school record in the hammer throw to pace the University of New Hampshire women's outdoor track team at the Dartmouth Outdoor Invitational on Saturday, April 23.
Wu's throw of 47.77 meters (156 feet 9 inches) broke Karen Wenmark's 1989 record of 154 feet 9 inches. She won the event with ease, finishing ahead of teammate Jessica Descartes (Randolph, Mass.), whose throw of 43.94 meters was only second best.
The 100-meter dash also saw Wildcats finishing first and second. Melissa Murphy (Rockland, Mass.) won the event, finishing in 12.69 seconds. Katie Louvitakis (Ludlow, Mass.) was close behind with a time of 12.88. Louvitakis added a second place finish on the day in the 200-meter event. Another UNH event winner was Kristen Meisner (Nashua, N.H.). Her time of 2:15.92 was good for first in the 800-meter event. Chloe Harry (Tyler, Tex.) also won for UNH, placing first in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:05.62. Amy Roccio (Beverly, Mass.) won the triple jump with a leap of 10.71 meters.
Nicole Whalen (Warwick, N.Y.) and Megan Hepp (Milton, Vt.) placed second and third, respectively, in the 1500-meter run. Whalen's time of 4:41.29 edged Hepp's by just .37 seconds. Jennifer Busse (Hollis, N.H.) took second in the 5000-meter. Mary Garrity (Manchester, N.H.) placed fourth in that same event. Heather Carmichael (Windsor, Vt.) took second in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:49.66. Kaitlin Norberg (Medfield, Mass.) took second place in the 100-meter hurdles and added a fifth place finish in the 200-meter dash.
Next up for the Wildcats are the Drake Relays and UConn Invitational. The Drake Relays run Wednesday, April 27 to Saturday, April 30, while the UConn Invitational will be held Saturday.
