Wildcats claim seven first-place finishes
DURHAM, N.H. -- The University of New Hampshire women's track and field team won six individual events as well as the 4x100-meter relay in an impressive performance at Saturday afternoon's non-scoring UNH Wildcat Invitational II, which was held at the Reginald F. Atkins Track and Field Facility.
UNH's seven victories in the 19-event meet were the most of any of the eight teams in competition. Dartmouth, with six event winners, recorded the second-highest total.
In the field events, Kiah Quarles (Derry, N.H.) recorded a distance of 5.63 meters to win the long jump and Jessica Descartes (Randolph, Mass.) bested the field, including teammate and runner-up Chia-Ling Wu (Merrimack, N.H.), in the hammer throw with a distance of 46.38. Descartes also placed third in the discus at 36.67.
UNH also fared well in the triple jump with second- and third-place efforts by Amy Roccio (Beverly, Mass.; 10.86) and Kathleen Hoppe (Hopkinton, Mass.; 10.80), respectively. Hoppe also placed fifth in the long jump (5.06) while Roccio led the 'Cat contingent in the high jump with third place (5 feet-3 inches). Amanda Cmielewski (Englishtown, N.J.) began her day with sixth place in the javelin (34.02m), then placed seventh in the hammer throw (40.94) and a team-best eighth in the shot put (10.51). In addition, Lauren Tebbetts (Waterville, Maine) recorded the fourth-best effort in the pole vault by clearing a height of 3.20.
On the track, Rachel Umberger led a Wildcat 1-2-3 finish in the 800-meter with a time of 2:13.92. Chelsea Corr (East Greenbush, N.Y.) and Nicole Whalen (Warwick, N.Y.) followed in 2:18.91 and 2:19.52. Megan Hepp (Milton, Vt.) was timed in 17:33.47 in the 5000-meter to beat the nearest competitor by more than 17 seconds. Chole Harry (Tyler, Texas) was the fastest runner in the 400 hurdles with her time of 1:05.82 and Heather Carmichael (Windsor, Vt.) was the first to cross the finish line in the 3000 steeplechase with a time of 11:56.25.
Katrina Louvitakis (Ludlow, Mass.) and Melissa Murphy (Rockland, Mass.) led the 'Cats in the sprints. Louvitakis took second in the 100m (13.27) and fourth in the 200m (27.19) while Murphy was third in the 100 (13.42) and fifth in the 200 (27.33). Kristen Meisner (Nashua, N.H.) was the top 'Cat in the 400 as her time of 59.38 placed third.
UNH also had a strong showing in the 100 hurdles with Kaitlin Norberg (Medfield, Mass.) in second at 15.44 and Quarles third in 15.45. Catherine Parker (Westford, Mass.), Hillary Greene (Old Towne, Maine) and Liz Stokinger (Hampstead, N.H.) recorded UNH's other top-six performances. Both Parker (1500; 4:45.32) and Greene (steeplechase; 12:11.71) placed third while Stokinger was fifth in the steeplechase at 12:33.05.
New Hampshire returns to action April 23 at the Dartmouth Invitational.
