UNH Women’s Outdoor Track Takes Second in Opener

ORONO, Maine - The University of New Hampshire women's outdoor track team opened the season with a second place finish to Maine, 97-81. Six different Wildcats took home first place finishes on April 5.

Jessica Descartes (Randolph, Mass.) won the hammer throw competition with a throw of 45.38 meters. Descartes also had a second place finish in the discus throw. Chia-Ling Wu (Merrimack, N.H.) was second behind Descartes in the hammer throw and was third in the discus. Fellow thrower Amanda Cmielewski (Englishtown, N.J.) won the javelin event, tossing for 32.60 meters.

Chloe Harry (Tyler, Tex.) won the 400-meter hurdles in 1:08.77 and also helped the team with a third place finish in the high jump. Lauren Tebbetts (Waterville, Maine) won the pole vault, clearing a height of 3.05 meters. Hillary Greene (Old Town, Maine) won the 3000-meter steeplechase, running the race in 12:31.76.

UNH finished first and second in the 100-meter dash. Melissa Murphy (Rockland, Mass.) won the event with a time of 13.05 with Katie Louvitakis (Ludlow, Mass.) finishing right behind her at 13.12. Louviakis took home another second place finish in the 200-meter dash. She and Murphy were instrumental in the 4x100 relay race, anchoring the winning team that also featured Kiah Quarles (Derry, N.H.) and Kaitlin Norberg (Medfield, Mass.). The team finished with a time of 49.97.

Quarles added a second place finish in the long jump and was third in the 100-meter hurdles. Amanda Downs (Laconia, N.H.) finished right behind Quarles in the long jump for a third place finish. Norberg took third place in the 100-meter hurdle event. Jennifer McCowan (Hopkinton, Mass.) took second in the 400-meter event with a time of 1:06.05.

The 4x400-relay took second place. The team featured Harry along with Kelly McCloskey (Hopewell Junct, N.Y.), Rebecca Haley (Dover, N.H.) and Kari Arnet (St. Charles, Ill.). Haley added a second place finish in the 1500-meter run, followed closely by McCloskey in third.

The UNH team is back in action on Saturday when they host the Wildcat Invitational on Saturday, April 9 at Reggie Atkins Track. The meet is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m in Durham.
