DURHAM, N.H. -- Fueled by victories from Leighann Carpenter (Princeton, Mass.), Amanda Cmielewski (Englishtown, N.J.) and Lesley Read (Dover, N.H.), the University of New Hampshire women's track and field team won Saturday afternoon's Wildcat Invitational III, which was held at the Reggie F. Atkins Track and Field Facility.
The Wildcats, who also won the 4x400 relay, amassed 175.66 points to defeat the University of Massachusetts (165 points), Boston College (156.33), Harvard (141) and Maine (36).
Cmielewski gave the Wildcats their initial first-place finish of the meet as her throw of 37.82 meters bested the field of 15 competitors in the javelin. Read caught teammate Katie Litwinowich (Holden, Mass.) down the stretch of the 1,500m and edged her at the finish line to earn first place with a time of 4 minutes, 51.43 seconds. Litwinowich crossed the finish line just .03-of-a-second later for second place. Carpenter also edged out a fellow Wildcat to win the 400m in 1:00.65. Amy Czesnowski (Branford, Conn.) took second place in 1:01.73.
Lauren Knight (Centerville, Mass.) recorded a pair of second-place finishes. She recorded a time of 14.77 seconds in the 100m hurdles, then raced over to the shot put, where her throw of 13.26m was the second-best effort of the day. Knight completed her day by earning points in the high jump, as she cleared 1.53m to earn fifth place.
Chloe Harry (Tyler, Texas) and Lauren Tebbetts (Waterville, Maine) also registered second-place finishes. Tebbetts placed second in the pole vault at 3.30m, while Harry was edged at the finish line in the 400m hurdles at 1:07.85. Harry was one of four Wildcats to point in that event. Kimberly Usseglio (Watertown, Mass.) had the third-fastest time of 1:08.50, while Kelly McCloskey (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.; 1:10.51) was fifth and Kathryn Donovan (Sudbury, Mass.; 1:14.31) placed eighth.
UNH also had four of the top eight finishers in the 400m and discus, as well as five of eight in the 1500m. In addition to Carpenter and Czesnowski in the 400m, Katie Louvitakis (Luldow, Mass.) placed fourth in 1:04.64 and Jennifer McGowan (Hopkinton, Mass.) was fifth in 1:06.20. Following Read and Litwinowich in the 1500m were Sarah Girard (Manchester, N.H.; 5:07.76), Allison March (Londonderry, N.H.; 5:12.48) and Jennifer Poirier (Manchester, N.H.; 5:19.11) in sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively.
Chia-Ling Wu (Merrimack, N.H.) led the UNH quartet in the discus with a throw of 39.44m that was good for third place. Jessica Descartes (Randolph, Mass.) was next in sixth place at 32.31, followed by Erin Moore (Nashua, N.H.) in seventh at 28.35 and Rebecca Quay (Lancaster, N.H.) in eighth at 28.15. Moore also placed seventh in both the shot put (11.60m) and hammer throw (41.01m), while Descartes took fifth in the hammer with a throw of 43.56m.
In other field events, Rebecca Eldridge (Portsmouth, N.H.) earned points in both jumps with fourth place in the triple jump (10.27m) and eighth in the long jump (5.02m). Usseglio also pointed in the triple jump as her distance of 10.19m was the fifth longest in the event. Katie Murray (Leominster, Mass.) and Christina Niles tied for eighth place in the high jump at 1.48m.
Back in the running events, Chelsea Corr (East Greenbush, N.Y.) was third in the 800m run with a time of 2:23.64. Three Wildcats ran as a tight group in the 5000m and it produced fourth, fifth and seventh place for UNH in the persons of Sarah Patsos (Meriden, Conn.; 18:50.34), Michelle Zitta (East Swanzey, N.H.; 18:51.23) and Ahsley Vance (Manchester, N.H.; 18:52.46).
Other top Wildcat efforts were by Kaitlin Norberg (Medfield, Mass.), who took sixth place in the 100m hurdles, and Jaime Sennott (Derry, N.H.) and Erin Johnson (Bow, N.H.), who were sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 200m. In addition, Tebbetts earned seventh place in the 100m.
