UNH women's track takes third at Wildcat Invitational

DURHAM, N.H. -- Lauren Knight (Centerville, Mass.) broke her own school record in the shot put with a throw of 13.43 meters and Megan Hepp (Milton, Vt.) took first place in the 5000-meter run to lead the University of New Hampshire women's track and field team to Saturday's third-place finish at the UNH Wildcat Invitational, which was held at the Reggie F. Atkins Track and Field Facility.

The Wildcats compiled 144 points to place behind the University of Connecticut (158 points) and Boston College (152) in the eight-team event.

Knight's record-setting throw – she holds eight school records – earned second place in the shot put. She also earned third place in the 100m high hurdles with a time of 15.01 seconds and took fourth in the long jump at 5.30m.

Hepp led a strong UNH contingent in the 5000m as four Wildcats placed in the top seven. She outdistanced the competition with a winning time of 17 minutes, 38.73 seconds. Emily Mareb (Great Barrington, Mass.) placed third in 17:48.27 while Mary Garrity (Manchester, N.H.) and Jennifer Busse (Brookline, N.H.) took sixth and seventh, respectively, in 18:22.30 and 18:27.74.

Lesley Read (Dover, N.H.) turned in UNH's other top finish of the day as her time of 11:02.28 placed second in the 3000m steeplechase. A quartet of 'Cats earned third-place finishes with Leighann Carpenter (Princeton, Mass.) in the 400m (1:00.27), Amy Czesnowski (Branford, Conn.) in the 400m high hurdles (1:05.63), Katie Murray (Leominster, Mass.) in the high jump (5-feet, 1-inch) and Jessica Descartes (Randolph, Mass.) in the hammer throw (42.07m).

Chia-Ling Wu (Merrimack, N.H.) and Erin Moore (Nashua, N.H.) also earned points in the hammer throw. Wu's distance of 41.88m earned fourth place and Moore recorded a throw of 40.39 to place sixth. Wu also pointed in the discus as her throw of 35.62 was the eight-best effort of the day. Teammate Shannon Oltman (Edmonds, Wash.) took fifth place in that event at 40.46m.

In other field events, Amanda Cmielewski (Englishtown, N.J.) was fourth in the javelin at 123-10, Lauren Tebbetts (Waterville, Maine) took fourth in the pole vault at 3.30m and Rebecca Eldridge (Portsmouth, N.H.) earned fourth in the triple jump with a distance of 10.67m. Also of note, Christina Niles finished eighth in the high jump, Amanda Downs (Laconia, N.H.) was seventh in the long jump and Janelle Bosse (Hampden, Maine) placed seventh in the triple jump.

Other top-eight performers on the track were: Amanda Reinhardt (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.; fourth place) and Chelsea Corr (East Greenbush, N.Y.; sixth) in the 800m; Kaitlin Norberg (Medfield, Mass.; fourth) in the 100m hurdles; Kelly McCloskey (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.; seventh) and Chloe Harry (Tyler, Texas; eighth) in the 400m hurdles; and Melissa Murphy (Rockland, Mass.; eighth) in the 100m.

New Hampshire won the 4x800m relay with a time of 9:40.73 and earned third place in the 4x100m (50.38).

UNH returns to action April 17 with a home meet against Dartmouth and Quinnipiac.
