New Hampshire women's track opens season at Raleigh Relays and Snowflake Classic

DURHAM, N.H. -- The University of New Hampshire women's outdoor track and field team opened the 2004 season last weekend as a split squad competing at both the Raleigh Relays at North Carolina State University and Northeastern University's Snowflake Classic.

At the Raleigh Relays, Lauren Knight (Centerville, Mass.) broke the school record in the shot put with a throw of 41 feet, 0.5 inches. That distance surpassed the mark of 40-11 established by Cathy Rosholt in 1979.

Megan Hepp (Milton, Vt.) had UNH's top placing at the event. She earned second place in the 10000-meter run on the Paul Derr Track with a time of 36 minutes, 16.89 seconds. Leighann Carpenter (Princeton, Mass.) placed sixth in her heat of the 800m with a time of 2:13.23, which was good for 14th overall. Kristen Meisner (Nashua, N.H.) ran in the same heat as Carpenter. She crossed the finish line in 2:14.51 to place 10th in the heat and 18th overall.

Leslie Read (Dover, N.H.) was the 20th runner to cross the finish line in the 5000m with a time of 16:58.58. The other Wildcat in competition at the Raleigh Relays was Amy Czesnowski (Branford, Conn.), who was 34th in the 400m in 1:05.80.

In the Snowflake Classic at Solomon Track, Lauren Tebbetts (Waterville, Maine) won the pole vault by clearing a height of 10-11.75 and Shannon Oltman (Edmonds, Wash.) led a strong discus contingent with a throw of 135-00 that earned second place. Jessica Descartes (Randolph, Mass.) placed fifth at 116-07 and Chia-Ling Wu (Merrimack, N.H.) was eighth at 103-10. Descartes recorded a distance of 138-09 in the hammer throw to finish sixth.

Rebecca Eldridge (Portsmouth, N.H.) was the only other Wildcat to place in two events. She was eighth in the triple jump with a distance of 33-00.25 and had the ninth-best effort in the long jump at 15-10.25. In another jumping event, Kelly Vail (Lynnfield, Mass.) placed eighth in the high jump with a height of 4-09.

UNH earned seventh place in two other field events with Amanda Cmielewski (Englishtown, N.J.) in the javelin (113-10) and Erin Moore (Nahsua, N.H.) in the shot put (36-07.5).

Melissa Murphy (Rockland, Mass.) raced to a sixth-place finish in the 100m at 13.19 seconds. In other sprints, Katrina Louvitakis (Ludlow, Mass.) took 12th place in the 200m (27.63) and Kimberly Usseglio (Watertown, Mass.) was clocked in 1:02.87 in the 400m for 16th place.

Lisa Winn (Rye, N.H.) and Sarah Girard placed fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 5000m with times of 18:35.38 and 18:46.95. Michelle Zitta (East Swanzey, N.H.) earned eighth place in the 1500m at 4:55.25.

In the hurdle events, Kaitlin Norberg (Medfield, Mass.) recorded the ninth-fastest time in the 100m (16.25) and Kelly McCloskey (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) was 10th in the 400m (1:07.74). The Wildcats placed fifth in the 4x100m relay as well as sixth in the 4x400m relay.
