DES MOINES, Iowa – Rosie Read (West Greenwich, R.I.), who competed as a freshman on the University of New Hampshire women's track and field team in 2010, finished eighth overall in Thursday's women's hammer throw at the 2010 USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championship, which are being held at Drake Stadium.
Read recorded a distance of 49.75 meters (163 feet-3 inches) to place eighth out of 18 competitors. It was the fourth best mark among nine collegiate representatives; she finished behind by a student-athlete from USC, Tennessee and Southern Illinois but bested those from Duke, Colorado and Mississippi.
Read had an initial throw of 45.73m, then recorded a distance of 47.84m on the second of her six throws and followed that with her top mark of 49.75m. She then tallied a throw of 47.36m and, after a foul, concluded the event with a 47.36m effort.
Read qualified for the Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championship with a throw of 49.31m at the America East Championships, which were held at UNH's Reggie F. Atkins Track & Field Facility. Read finished third at the meet, which added to her outstanding spring season.
The UNH men's and women's track & field teams have sent qualifiers to Junior Nationals for three of the last four years. In the past, seniors Brice Paey (Milton, N.H.) and Chris Morgan (Goffstown, N.H.) – as well as juniors Camille Quarles (Derry, N.H.), Megan Donahue (Stratham, N.H.) and Mike Simon (Durham, Conn.) – have all competed at the USA Junior National meet.
