Women's Swimming & Diving Named CSCAA Scholar All-America Team

CSCAA 2014 SPRING SCHOLAR ALL-AMERICA TEAM AWARDS

DURHAM, N.H. -- The University of New Hampshire women's swimming & diving team was recognized Thursday by the Collegiate Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) as a Scholar All-America team for the spring semester. The Wildcats posted an America East-best 3.51 GPA and tied for the 16th highest average in Division I.

The CSCAA Scholar All-America Team award is presented to college and university swimming & diving teams who have achieved a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The award is presented twice annually, once in the fall semester and again in the spring to recognize teams achieving a 3.0 GPA in the semester.

"As a Division I program, we emphasize the importance of balancing school work with our training, and our team takes pride in our continued academic success," said head coach Josh Willman. "This semester, the team earned our highest team GPA ever and a number of swimmers were inducted into the National College Athletic Honor Society, Chi Sigma Alpha. Overall, it has been an exceptional year."

New Hampshire, the 2014 America East champions, compiled another decorated season in its storied history with Willman at the helm. The Wildcats set a myriad of pool, UNH and America East records, twice recognized as the Philip Hunsaker CollegeSwimming.com Women's Division I Swimmer of the Week (Jenni Roberts (Springvale, Maine); Jan. 29 and Katie Mann (Prince George British Columbia); Feb. 19), five different swimmers make NCAA provisional cuts (Bettina Caspersen (Lyngby, Denmark), Oneida Cooper (Johannesburg, South Africa), Lauren McCandless (Macungie, Pa.), Mann and Roberts), received its highest-ever ranking in the CollegeSwimming.com Division I national poll on Feb. 18 (No. 14) and eclipsed the conference's championship points record for the second consecutive year (877). Willman, the 13-time America East Coach of the Year and four-time ECAC Coach of the Year, guided New Hampshire to back-to-back America East Championships for the third time in its history and sixth overall title on Feb. 16.

McCandless, a two-time America East Women's Swimming & Diving Scholar-Athlete (2012 and 2014) and the 2014 Jim Urquhart Student-Athlete of the Year, became the first woman in conference history to win the 1,650-yard freestyle four times. Additionally, McCandless received the inaugural Dave Alexander Coaches Award and went on to compete at the ECAC Championships.

Mann also broke UNH and America East records in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke time trial with times of 1 minute, 2.19 seconds and 2:10.30 respectively at the conference championships. The junior went on to compete at both the ECAC and the NCAA Championships, highlighted by a 19th place finish in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:10.39. Mann's 400-yard IM performance at the NCAA's was a best by a Wildcat since 1998.
