Women’s Soccer Slated With Home Opener Against Holy Cross (Aug. 28); Travels To Northeastern (Aug. 31)

DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire women's soccer team is slated for two games this week.  The Wildcats will host the College of the Holy Cross in their home opener Thursday, Aug. 28 (7 p.m.). The squad will then hit the road on Sunday, Aug. 31 at Northeastern University for a 1 p.m. kickoff.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE 'CATS: UNH (1-1-0) fell short by a score of 1-0 against Central Connecticut State on Sunday, Aug. 24. Sophomore Morgan Smith (Canton, Conn.) led the team with a total of three shots and one on net. The 'Cats posted a total of seven shots with two on target.  Sophomore netminder Mimi Borkan (Medfield, Mass.) made four saves in 90 minutes of action. Senior defender Hannah Blondin (East Hampton, Conn.), freshman forward Brooke Murphy (Monson, Mass.) and senior midfielder Caroline Murray (New Canaan, Conn.)  were named to the  All-Tournament Team at the TD Bank Classic.

SCOUTING NEW HAMPSHIRE: Brooke Murphy leads the squad with one goal (two points) and has taken a total of six shots with five on target.  Hannah Blondin leads the Wildcats in assists (one). Junior Kirsten O'Neil (Hampton, N.H.) is second on the team with five shots.  Sophomore goalkeeper Mimi Borkan has posted a total of six saves in 180 minutes of play adding one clean sheet for a 0.50 GAA and a .857 save percentage.

HEAD-TO-HEAD WITH OPPONENTS: The last time UNH and Holy Cross played one another dates back to last season (09/25) and resulted in a draw (0-0); Borkan posted her first collegiate shutout of her career. The Wildcats and Huskies played last season (09/05) as the game ended in a 1-1 draw (2 OT) at Bremner Field.

LAST TIME OUT FOR HOLY CROSS: The Crusaders (2-0-0) defeated LIU Brooklyn (08/25) by a score of 5-0. Freshman forward Aly Spencer tallied the 14th hat trick in program history and also recorded an assist. Senior Carly McCabe and sophomore Brooke Holle combined for the clean sheet.  Holy Cross held advantages in total shots (17-5), shots on goal (9-2) and corner kicks (10-0).

SCOUTING THE CRUSADERS: Aly Spencer leads the squad with four goals and one assist (nine points).  Caitlin Harty (2g) and Anne Galvin (1g, 2a) are not far behind with four points each.  Carly McCabe has totaled four saves on the season through two games for a 1.000 save percentage and hasn't allowed a goal past her.

LAST TIME OUT FOR NORTHEASTERN: The Huskies are 1-1-0 on the season.  Most recently, the squad lost a 1-0 (2 OT) match on Sunday (08/24) vs. La Salle University.  Up next the team takes on the Providence Friars this Thursday (08/28) at 7 p.m. on the road. 

SCOUTING THE HUSKIES: Freshman Hannah Lopiccolo leads the team with two goals (four points).  Another freshman, Kayla Cappuzzo, leads the way for the most assists (two).  Senior goalkeer Paige Burnett has made a total of three saves on the season with one shutout for a 0.47 GAA and a 0.750 save percentage.

UP NEXT FOR NEW HAMPSHIRE: The 'Cats will take a week off from Sunday and continue on the road at UMass in Amherst on Sunday Sept. 7 (1 p.m.).

HOME GAME PROMOTIONS: UNH is happy to announce The Oyster River Youth Association and Kittery Soccer Club will be in attendance Thursday, Aug. 28 versus Holy Cross. Twenty-two kids will walk out with both soccer squads before the starting lineup.  Following the conclusion of the contest the Wildcats will be signing autographs.
