KINGSTON, R.I. – The University of New Hampshire women's soccer squad fell by a score of 2-0 to the University of Rhode Island Sunday afternoon. Junior Brianna Spitler (Montoursville, Pa.) led the 'Cats with a pair of shots.
The loss drops UNH to 1-3-0 on the year while Rhode Island improves to 2-2-0 overall.
Tara Fraprie (Farmington, Conn.) recorded the first shot of the game as she ripped a shot at the URI net. The attempt was saved by Ram goalie Reilly Lindsey. Samantha Leyh scored the first goal of the game in the 22nd minute to give the Rams a 1-0 lead. The play resulted from a corner kick by Jennifer Barrientos that Leyh headed into the goal.
At the end of the first half, the University of Rhode Island contained a 1-0 lead.
In the 66th minute, Nicole Brennan recorded the second goal of the game for Rhode Island to give the Rams a 2-0 advantage. Donika Murray took the initial shot that hit the crossbar, but Brennan found the rebound and the back of the net.
Spitler attempted to get the 'Cats on the board as she ripped a shot in the 77th minute that went just wide of the target. Freshman Anna Deweirdt (Seattle, Wash.) kept offensive pressure on with a shot that ended up just high of the net.
At the end of 90 minutes of play, the Rams held on for a 2-0 victory. Freshman goalie Mimi Borkan (Medfield, Mass.) played the game in its entirety in net for New Hampshire and made five saves on the seven shots she faced in her first game of her collegiate career. Reilly got the win in net for the Rams as her record improves to 1-1-0 on the year.
The 'Cats return to the pitch Thursday, Sept. 5 as they host Northeastern in a night tilt. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
