KANSAS CITY, Kan. – The National Soccer Coaches Association of America recently announced that seniors Sara Hourihan (Lynnfield, Mass.) and Caitlin Whelan (Weymouth, Mass.), of the University New Hampshire women’s soccer team, were named 2008 NSCAA/adidas Women’s Collegiate Scholar All-East Region Honorable Mentions.
Hourihan, who is a kinesiology: exercise science major with a 3.68 GPA, was also named to the ESPN The Magazine Women’s Soccer Academic All-District Third Team, as well as the America East All-Academic Team this season. Last season, Hourihan, who has been selected to the America East Commissioner’s Honor Roll in her first three seasons, was the recipient of the UNH women’s soccer Student-Athlete Award, presented to the athlete with the highest grade point average during the traditional season of competition. On the field this season, the forward led the team in both goals (7) and points (16) and leaves UNH tied for fifth on the program’s all-time goals (26) and points (58) list.
Whelan, a therapeutic recreation major with a 3.38 GPA, was also named to the America East All-Academic Team this season and was chosen for the America East Commissioner’s Honor Roll in the previous season – her first in the conference. Whelan, the 2007 Midfielder of the Year, was selected as an America East All-Conference First Team member for the second straight year at the end of a regular season in which she tallied nine points on three goals and three assists in 2008.
