DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire women’s soccer program and 12th-year head coach Michael Jackson paid tribute to the student-athletes on the 2006 Wildcats team at the annual banquet, which was held Feb. 20.
    The ‘Cats made it to the America East postseason for a league leading sixth straight appearance and compiled an overall record of 6-11-1. UNH downed Binghamton University, 4-2, in penalty kicks before falling to eventual champion Hartford University in the semifinals.
    The Player’s Award, which is presented to the team member who the players select as deserving of special honor as the award distinguishes the individual who has earned respect from her peers, was presented to senior goalkeeper Lynn Gugliuzza (Kenmore, N.Y.). Gugliuzza started all 18 games and made seven shutouts on the season. She registered a 1.16 goals against average and compiled 93 saves.
UNH sophomore Michelle Sheehan (Belmont, Mass.) was the recipient of the Honor Award, which is presented to the player who the coaching staff finds to have made significant contributions to the team and feels the individual deserves special recognition for her efforts and work ethic. Sheehan had a breakout season for the Wildcats as she led the team in assists with five and was second in goals with two. She notched two game winning goals and made all 18 starts.
The gold Medal Award, which is given to the team member who through strength of character, will, and commitment has overcome obstacles and challenges to maximize her potential and be a positive role model to the team went to senior Lia Barros (Sammamish, Wash.). Barros, who started all 18 games, often controlled the pace of the game on both sides of the field was a consistent leader on and off the playing field.
    The Student Athlete Award went to three members of the squad as freshman Allison Yost (Langhorne, Pa.), junior Nicole Lucey (Keene, N.H.) and Gugliuzza were each presented the award for having the highest grade point average during the traditional season of competition.
