BOSTON - Lindsey Smagula (Bedford, N.H.) and Michelle Sheehan (Belmont, Mass.) of the University of New Hampshire women's soccer team were named Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively, the America East conference announced Monday.

UNH has now won all four of the conference's Rookie of the Week awards this season. Sara Hourihan (Lynnfield, Mass.) earned that honor the previous three weeks.

Smagula, a senior back, received the honor for both her defensive and offensive contributions as the Wildcats' went 2-0-0 last week with victories against Holy Cross (3-0) and UMBC (4-3 in overtime). Smagula scored the golden goal in the 96th minute in the conference opener at UMBC when she blasted a direct kick from the top of the penalty area into the upper-left corner of the net. She recorded an assist vs. HC when she intercepted a pass on the defensive end of the field, advanced to midfield with a couple of touches and served the ball over the Crusaders' defense that Sheehan tracked down and converted into a goal. On defense, her efforts helped limit both opponents to just five shots on goal and UNH's fifth shutout of the season vs. Holy Cross.

Sheehan, a freshman forward, scored a goal in both Wildcat games last week. Her aforementioned goal vs. HC was her first collegiate goal and extended UNH's lead to 3-0. She followed that with a goal against UMBC that gave the 'Cats a 3-2 lead in the 82nd minute.

New Hampshire (6-3-0 overall, 1-0-0 America East) returns to action Sept. 29 (7 p.m.) at the University of Hartford. The next Wildcat home game is Nike Youth Day on Oct. 2 vs. Maine. Game time at Lewis Fields is 1 p.m.
