DURHAM, N.H. – Debbie Newman (Ashford, Conn.), a sophomore back on the University of New Hampshire women’s soccer team, was a New England Women’s Intercollegiate Soccer Association (NEWISA) 1st Team All New England selection, NEWISA announced Thursday. UNH junior forward Chiara Best (Rose Valley, Pa.) was a 2nd Team honoree.
Newman, whose other collegiate accolades include two-time selection to the America East All-Conference Second Team as well as 2002 All-Rookie Team, was one of the team’s top defenders in the regular season and continued that strong play into the postseason to also earn America East All-Championship Team honors.
Best recorded a team-high six assists, as well as four game-winning goals, and was second on the team in both goals (12) and points (30). Her 30 points ranks second on UNH’s list of single-season superlatives and her 12 goals is tied for third. Her season highlights included a five-point effort (two goals, assist) in UNH’s 7-2 first-round victory against Northeastern University in the America East Championships and her 50th career point. Best’s other collegiate accolades include 2003 America East First Team, 2002 Second Team and All-Rookie Team in 2001.
