New Hampshire women's soccer team battles for playoff position

DURHAM, N.H. - The University of New Hampshire women's soccer team, currently third in the America East standings, play host to Towson University and the University of Delaware this weekend with all three teams battling for one of six conference postseason berths.

The 'Cats play Towson at Lewis Fields on Oct. 26. Game time is 3 p.m. Delaware comes to town Oct. 28 for a one o'clock match.

UNH, which has won two of its last three games to improve to 5-8-3 overall, enters the weekend with 13 points (a 4-3-1 record) to trail only Hartford (24 points, 8-0-0) and Boston University (22, 7-0-1). The Wildcats have been led offensively by freshman Chiara Best (Rose Valley, Pa.). The reigning Rookie of the Week has scored eight goals and assisted on five others to register 21 points.

New Hampshire is followed closely by Vermont (12, 4-4-0), Maine (11, 3-3-2) and Hofstra (11, 3-3-2) as well as both of this weekend's opponents. Towson and Delaware are currently tied for seventh place with 10 points (3-4-1).

With three points awarded for a victory and one for a tie, even Northeastern (9, 2-3-3), Drexel (8, 2-4-2) and Stony Brook (7, 2-5-1) are still in contention for America East postseason play.

The top two teams earn a first-round bye - Hartford and Boston University have already secured the top two seeds - while the No. 3 seed will play host to No. 6 and the fifth-seeded team will travel to play the fourth seed. Those first round games will be held Nov. 6.

The regular season concludes next week as UNH plays host to Maine on Nov. 2 (2:30 p.m.).
