BOSTON-- Jess Burnap (New Canaan, Conn.) and Cristina Covucci (Concord, Mass.) of the University of New Hampshire women's lacrosse team were named Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, by America East on Monday. The duo led UNH to a 2-0 record last week with victories against Boston College (19-11) and the University of Massachusetts (12-11, 2ot).
Burnap, a junior midfielder who received the same honor March 16, recorded 10 points with nine goals and one assist. She tied the school single-game record for goals with eight in UNH's victory against BC last Wednesday and followed that with a goal and assist in the 12-11 double overtime win at UMass. Burnap also contributed five draw controls, three ground balls and one caused turnover in the pair of victories. In her record-tying performance, she netted three goals in a span of 1:52 to quickly give UNH a 4-0 lead, and the second of those goals was her 100th career point. Burnap currently has 108 career points on 84 goals and 24 assists.
Covucci, a freshman midfielder, played a pivotal role in UNH's win at UMass. With the Minutewomen clinging to a one goal lead in the final minutes, Covucci forced a turnover and the 'Cats scored on the ensuing possession to force overtime. She finished the game with seven ground balls and seven draw controls, both of which are highs for a Wildcat this season, as well as three caused turnovers.
Burnap leads UNH in goals (29) and points (34), and she is second in draw controls (16) and third in assists (five).
Covucci, who has contributed offensively with two goals and an assist, leads the Wildcats in both ground balls (32) and draw controls (17).
New Hampshire returns to action April 10 at Stony Brook University for its America East opener. The next Wildcat home game is April 14 vs. Harvard. Game time at Memorial Field is 3:30 p.m.
