DURHAM, N.H. -- Danielle Martin, a freshman goalkeeper on the University of New Hampshire women's lacrosse team, was bestowed the honor Rookie of the Week by America East on Monday.
Martin, out of Centennial High School via Ellicott City, Md., earned her first collegiate start last week at the University of Massachusetts. She exited the game with 2:18 remaining in the first half and UNH trailing 6-4. Martin re-entered the match with the Wildcats facing a 13-8 deficit and 9:59 left on the clock. She stopped all three shots on goal the rest of the way, which allowed the 'Cats to storm back within 13-12 with 33.4 seconds to play. Although UNH lost by that one-goal margin, her strong effort defending the goal keyed the comeback bid. Martin finished with five saves in 37:41 of action.
Those numbers gave Martin a 9.56 goals-against-average and a .455 save percentage last week. For the season, Martin has played in four games and recorded a .438 save percentage with a 12.04 GAA.
UNH (1-4) is scheduled to play its home opener April 5 against Brown University. The game is set for 3:30 p.m at Memorial Field.
