UNH Athletics Donates Over 1,000 Pairs of Shoes to Soles4Souls

DURHAM, N.H. -- The University of New Hampshire athletic department again joined forces in the worldwide campaign Soles4Souls, contributing to the combative movement against poverty.

Soles4Souls is a not-for-profit organization that collects millions of shoes and distributes the donations within the U.S. and internationally to the less fortunate. The mission of Soles4Souls is to combat the destructive pandemic of poverty. Soles4Soles commits its efforts towards a variety of individuals in need across the globe from orphanages and disaster relief.

For the third year, UNH conducted its annual shoe drive with Soles4Souls this spring, collecting over 1,000 pairs of shoes. All the UNH teams set up boxes in the locker rooms for student-athletes to drop off unwanted shoes. Furthermore, the UNH community and visitors were able to drop off used shoes at the UNH Field House as well as at home contests. Over the three years, UNH athletics has collectively donated over 5,000 shoes since starting the charitable effort.

“This all was not possible without the help from other college teams and local club organizations,” said junior goalkeeper Carlie Tarbell (Wakefield, Mass.) of the field hockey team. “We had a tremendous response from everyone involved and were able to collect almost 500 pairs of shoes in just two days. Soles4Soles is an incredible organization and I'm happy we could even make a slight difference in the contribution.”

Junior defensive specialist Katie Sattora (Avon, N.Y.) of the volleyball team also credited other teams outside of UNH to support the cause. “I informed what Soles4Soles was to my team and then brought up the idea to have the Boston College volleyball team bring shoes to donate when they played us at home during our spring season. We also decided to have a clinic for all of the club Seacoast players in the area to come out before the BC game and were all asked to bring any shoes that they could donate as well. Overall, it was a tremendous success.”
