BLAINE, Minn. – Kacey Bellamy (Westfield, Mass.), a senior defenseman and captain of the 2009 University of New Hampshire women’s ice hockey team, was one of 23 players selected to the 2009-10 U.S. Women’s National Team. The announcement was made Monday afternoon by USA Hockey.
The squad, which was selected following a 41-player USA Hockey Women’s National Festival held Aug. 18-24 at the National Sports Center (Blaine, Minn.), will be centralized in the Twin Cities (Minn.) and compete in the Qwest Tour – a 10-game domestic tour that includes a Nov. 22 stop at UNH’s Whittemore Center against a Hockey East All-Star Team – in preparation for the 2010 Winter Olympics.
Bellamy is one of seven defensemen selected to the U.S. Women’s National Team from the original pool of 12. She is a two-time member of the U.S. Women’s National Team for the International Ice Hockey Federation World Women’s Championship; she won a gold medal in both 2008 and 2009 and was selected one of Team USA’s top-three players in ‘09. Bellamy was a member of the U.S. Women’s Select Team that won the 2008 Four Nations Cup as well as the Select Team that won silver medal in ’07 and ’06.
In the ’09 season at UNH, Bellamy was selected to the RBK All-America First Team. She recorded six goals and 22 assists for 28 points in 35 games to rank third nationally in defensemen scoring. Bellamy was second on the team in plus/minus (+22), tied for third in assists and was fourth in points. She was named a Hockey East First Team All-Star, then scored a goal in both the semifinal and final games of the Hockey East Championship Tournament to lead the Wildcats to their fourth consecutive league tournament title and garner Tournament MVP and All-Tournament Team accolades.
Bellamy, the 2009 recipient of UNH’s Jim Urquhart Student-Athlete of the Year Award, compiled 27 goals and 80 assists for 107 points in 143 career games. She was one point shy of tying the UNH benchmark for career points by a defenseman shared by Kristen Thomas and Cindy MacKay.
The 2010 U.S.
Women’s Olympic Women’s Ice Hockey Team, comprised of
21 players, will be announced in mid-December.
