WAKEFIELD, Mass. – Jenn Wakefield (Pickering, Ontario), a sophomore forward on the seventh-ranked University of New Hampshire women’s ice hockey team, was named TPS Hockey Player of the Week by Hockey East on Monday. Wakefield received the same distinction earlier this season on Oct. 13.
Wakefield recorded career highs in both assists (three) and points (five) to lead the Wildcats to an 8-3 win against then seventh-ranked Dartmouth College on Jan. 16; the two goals matched her personal best, and she also had a +2 rating.
Wakefield tallied 2-2-4 in the second period, and her power-play strike gave UNH a 4-0 lead and proved to be the game-winning goal. She had set up the team’s second and third goals – just 3:13 apart – to quickly give the ‘Cats a three-goal advantage. Wakefield’s even-strength goal with 28 seconds remaining in the second stanza extended UNH’s lead to 6-2.
Wakefield is ranked No. 5 in the nation in goals per game (0.94) and No. 10 in points per game (1.61). She is also second in game-winning goals (five) as well as sixth in both power-play goals (seven) and shorthanded goals (two). Wakefield leads the team in goals (17) and points (29), as well as power-play goals and shots (105). In other stats, she is third in plus/minus and second in assists.
New Hampshire (10-5-5 overall, 5-2-3 Hockey East) returns to action Jan. 20 (7:15 p.m.) at Northeastern University. The Wildcats play host to the University of Maine for a two-game series Jan. 23 (7 p.m.) & 24 (2 p.m.).
