WAKEFIELD, Mass. – Kacey Bellamy (Westfield, Mass.), senior defenseman and captain of the fourth-ranked University of New Hampshire women’s ice hockey team, was honored as TPS Hockey Player of the Week by Hockey East on Monday.
Bellamy recorded two points, both on goals, and garnered the Hockey East Tournament MVP honor for leading the Wildcats to their fourth consecutive league tourney title. It marked her third selection to the Hockey East All-Tournament Team. Bellamy, who garnered First Team All-Star recognition on the eve of the tourney, was also voted to the all-tourney team in 2006 and 2007.
Bellamy gave the Wildcats a 1-0 first-period lead in both the semifinal game vs. Providence College and the championship game vs. sixth-ranked Boston College. She scored a power-play goal at 14:31 of the first period against PC to spark the ‘Cats to a 3-1 win and scored at 10:40 of the opening frame in the March 8 title game vs. the Eagles.
Bellamy has compiled six goals and 22 assists for 28 points in 34 games this season to rank third in the nation in defensemen scoring. She is third on the team in assists and fourth in points as well as second in plus/minus.
In 142 career games, Bellamy has compiled 27 goals and 80 assists for 107 points. The point total is just one shy of tying the program’s record for points by a defensemen, and that benchmark of 108 is currently shared by Kristen Thomas (2001-04) and Cindy MacKay (1980-83).
UNH (24-5-5), which won its fourth consecutive Hockey East regular-season and tournament titles this year, enters the 2009 NCAA Women’s Ice Hockey Championship with a 15-game winning streak. The fourth-seeded Wildcats are the hosts of a March 14 (1 p.m.) quarterfinal game against Minnesota-Duluth. Tickets go on sale March 11 and will be available at the Whitteore Center box office and through Ticketmaster.
