CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Junior point guard Ariel Gaston (Toledo, Ohio) of the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team has been named the America East Co-Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday.
This is the first weekly award Gaston has won in her collegiate career. New Hampshire has collected three weekly awards this season from the conference. Freshman guard Kristen Anderson (Greene, Maine) was named Rookie of the Week on Jan. 6 while sophomore guard Elizabeth Belanger (Acton, Mass) was bestowed the Player of the Week award on Feb. 3.
Gaston registered 16.5 points and 3.7 rebounds while averaging 37.5 minutes per game in a pair of wins for UNH in the week.
In a 64-46 victory at Binghamton University (Feb. 12), the junior point guard earned career-highs in points (19) and steals (five). Gaston poured in all of her points in the second half on 8 of 8 shooting from the field and draining a pair of free throws.
At home against the University of Hartford (Feb. 16) in a 76-71 overtime win, Gaston earned her first career double-double on 14 points and a personal-best 11 rebounds. The point guard also orchestrated the Wildcat offense to a .489 field goal percentage with a game-high five assists.
UNH competes its final away game of the regular season, visiting the University of Vermont on Wednesday, Feb. 19 (7 p.m.). The Wildcats cap off the regular season with three-straight home games.
