UNH WOMEN'S BASKETBALL OPENS SEASON WITH 81-56 EXHIBITION VICTORY

DURHAM, N.H. - Maren Matthias (Guilford, Conn.) had 20 points and nine rebounds to lead the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team to an 81-56 win over Austrian club team UBBC Herzogenburg in an exhibition game Friday night at Lundholm Gymnasium.

Matthias, a First Team All-America East selection last season, was 9-14 from the floor en route to her 20-point effort. Freshman Ray Williams (Mississauga, Ontario) had 10 points and 10 rebounds in the victory, while classmate Salée-Marie Johnson (Brampton, Ontario) finished with 12 points. Kate Poulin (Kitchener, Ontario) was the other Wildcat to reach double figures, as she recorded 10 points on the evening.

Sheryl Klick paced UBBC Herzogenburg with 17 points.

UNH trailed 4-0 early before going on a 13-2 run capped by a Matthias layup at the 14:27 mark of the opening stanza to give New Hampshire a 13-6 lead. The guests cut the lead to 15-13 with 12:45 left on a Klick trifecta, but that would be as close as Herzogenburg would get, as UNH's Kate Dillon (Overland Park, Kansas) and Whitney Edwards (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) nailed back-to-back threes to give UNH a 21-13 lead with 11:16 to go. The Wildcats took a 34-22 lead into halftime.

The Wildcats quickly pushed the lead to 18, 42-24, 1:22 into the second half when Matthias converted a conventional three-point play. Herzogenburg cut the lead to 15 twice, the last time with 10:13 left, but UNH went on a 10-0 run capped by a Matthias bucket with 7:20 to go to give the 'Cats a 25-point cushion at 69-44.

All 10 players that saw the floor for New Hampshire were in the scoring column. The Wildcats owned a 51-33 rebounding edge, including a 22-6 margin on the offensive glass, and forced 24 Herzogenburg turnovers, with New Hampshire recording 15 steals.

New Hampshire hosts the Springfield Spirit for its second exhibition game on November 20 before entertaining Saint Bonaventure in the 2003-04 regular season opener on Tuesday, November 25. Tipoff for both games is scheduled for 7:00 pm at Lundholm Gymnasium.
