BOSTON - Maren Matthias (Guilford, Conn.), a junior center on the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team, was named the America East Player of the Week on Monday (March 10). It marks the second time this season Matthias has won the award.
In two games last week, Matthias averaged 24.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per contest while shooting 70% (21-30) from the floor. She had a game-high 26 points on 12-18 shooting in UNH's 60-50 win over Hartford last Wednesday (March 5), then followed that up with a 23 point performance on 9-12 shooting at Binghamton three days later as the 'Cats fell 70-68. Against the Bearcats, Matthias was limited to seven minutes of action in the first half due to foul trouble, but scored 17 of her 23 points after intermission, going 8-10 from the floor in the second half.
Matthias is a big reason why New Hampshire has earned the No. 4 seed in this week's America East Women's Basketball Championship. The 6-3 center leads the Wildcats in scoring (17.0 ppg), rebounding (9.6 rpg), blocked shots (42) and field goal percentage (.548). She needs just nine points to become the 12th player in school history to record 1,000 points.
UNH (12-15, 7-9 America East) returns to action Thursday when it faces fifth-seeded Stony Brook in the quarterfinals of the America East tournament hosted by the University of Hartford. Game time is set for 8:30 pm.
