BOSTON -Maren Matthias (Guilford, Conn.), a junior center on the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team, was named America East Player of the Week on Monday (January 20). Matthias shared the award with Stony Brook's Sherry Jordan.
Matthias grabbed a career-high 19 rebounds and registered 19 points in a 63-58 win over Northeastern on January 18, UNH's only game last week, for her third-straight double-double. Matthias scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the second half. She also assisted on Aubrey Danen's three-pointer with 1:40 remaining that gave UNH a 57-55 lead, one of her three assists on the afternoon.
Matthias, a Second Team America East selection last season, leads the Wildcats in scoring (15.6 ppg) and rebounding (10.4 rpg) and has recorded eight double-doubles through the first 14 games for UNH. She leads America East in rebounding and is sixth in scoring. Recently, Matthias recorded her 500th career rebound, becoming the third-fastest in UNH history to reach the 500 rebound plateau.
The Wildcats return to action Wednesday (January 22) when they travel to Boston University for a 7 p.m. game. The next UNH home game is January 25, when the 'Cats host Binghamton in a 1 p.m. contest.
