NEWARK, Del. - The University of Delaware posted a 79-59 win over the University of New Hampshire in women's basketball action here at the Bob Carpenter Center this afternoon. Delaware extended the second-longest winning streak in the nation to 11 games and improved to 16-3 and 10-0 in America East, while UNH is now 4-6 in the league and 6-13 overall.
A pair of freshmen stood out for UNH. Maren Matthias (Guilford, Conn) notched her second career double-double by putting in 16 points and hauling down a career-high 14 rebounds. Quandra Harrison (Brockton, Mass.) had a career-high nine points for the 'Cats. Cindy Johnson had a game-high 20 points for the Fightin' Blue Hens.
The game went back and forth early, and New Hampshire would take a 20-19 lead with 8:17 left in the opening period on a Matthias layup. From there, the Hens would go on a 17-2 run capped by an Allison Trapp free throw to go up 36-22 with 2:58 remaining. Delaware would take a 40-27 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The hosts would then score the first seven points of the second half to increase the lead to 47-27 with 18:20 left in the ballgame. The Wildcats would get no closer than 16 points the rest of the way.
UNH returns home next Friday (2/2) with a 7 p.m. game at the Whittemore Center against Vermont.
