AMHERST, Mass. – Senior throwers Jeff Kaste (Atkinson, N.H.) and Reed Liset (Dover, N.H.) each recorded a pair of top-three finishes to lead the University of New Hampshire men’s outdoor track & field team to a second-place finish at the nine-team UMass Spring Meet on Saturday afternoon at the UMass Track & Field Complex.
With 139 points, the Wildcats finished ahead of UMass (131), Connecticut (68.50), Vermont (62.50), Central Connecticut State (16), American International (51), Harvard (22) and Hartford (9.50), but behind Dartmouth (177.50).
Kaste won the hammer throw with a toss of 56.32 meters, while sophomore Paul DeTurk (Durham, N.H.) placed fourth at 55.03. Kaste was also second in the shot put with a throw of 15.88 meters, behind sophomore Brice Paey (Milton, N.H.) and his mark of 16.98 meters.
Liset finished first in the discus with a throw of 47.20 meters and was also third in the shot put behind Paey and Kaste at 15.35 meters.
Senior Pat Casey (South Yarmouth, Mass.) also won an event on the field side as he finished first in the high jump with a leap of 2.04 meters.
Freshman Bill Godfrey (Merrimack, N.H.) was the lone individual to score a win on the track, placing first in the 800 meters in one minute, 52.37 seconds.
The Wildcats’ 4x100-meter relay team finished on top in a time of 42.10 seconds.
Junior Will Brehm (Pembroke, N.H.) placed second in the 100 meters in a time of 10.96 seconds.
Sophomore Alex Macleod (East Longmeadow, Mass.) was also second in the 400-meter hurdles in 54.67 seconds.
Freshman Sean Mitchell (Concord, Calif.) finished third in the 400 meters in 49.01 seconds.
Classmate Alex Beaulieu (Merrimack, N.H.) placed third in the 3000-meter steeplechase in a time of 10:05.09.
Back in the field, junior Chris Morgan (Goffstown, N.H.) and sophomore Mike Simon (Durham, Conn.) finished second and fourth, respectively, in the javelin with throws of 57.04 and 55.94 meters.
Junior Frank Radlof (Milford, N.H.) was fifth in the long jump with a leap of 6.73 meters.
Classmate Brett Clark (Merrimack, N.H.) placed fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 13.25 meters.
The Wildcats return to action Saturday and Sunday, May 2-3 at the America East Championships at Binghamton University’s Alumni Stadium. Events on both days kick off at 9 a.m.
